CAN SKIN CANCER BE PREVENTED?

Sun exposure is the most preventable risk factor for all skin cancers. This is what you can do:

· Apply generously sunscreen with a broad spectrum, and water resistant with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or more on all exposed skin. “Broad spectrum” provides protection against ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB). Reapply approximately every two hours, even on cloudy days and after swimming or sweating.

· Wear protective clothing, such as a long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, whenever possible.

· Look for shade when appropriate. Remember that the sun’s rays are strongest between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. If your shadow is smaller than you, look for the shadow.

· Be more careful near water, snow and sand as they reflect and intensify the harmful rays of the sun, increasing the chances of burning in the sun.

· Obtain vitamin D safely through a healthy diet that can include vitamin supplements. Do not expose yourself to the sun to get vitamin D.

· Avoid tanning beds. Ultraviolet light from the sun and tanning beds can cause skin cancer and wrinkles. If you want to be tanned, consider using a self-tanning product or spray, but continue to use a sunscreen.
