Although fruits are mostly sweet, some are ideal for diabetics because of their effectiveness in managing blood sugar.
There are fruits that contain more sugar such as grapes, watermelon, fig and papaya, so they are not recommended for those who have prediabetes or diabetes because they increase the chances of generating high blood sugar spikes.
All fruits can be consumed by diabetics, provided they are ingested in small quantities, so as not to stimulate the increase of blood sugar. The most indicated are the following:
Cherries
They contain anthocyanins known for their blood sugar lowering effect by increasing insulin production by 50 percent. They help fight other diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes.
Cherries have a glycemic index of 22, one of the lowest ratings of any fruit. Half a cup of fresh, dried, frozen or canned cherries is a good portion.
Black plums
Researchers from Father Muller Medical College in India, observed the effects of black plums in the treatment of diabetes. The presence of anthocyanins, ellagic acid and hydrolysable tannins, make it a beneficial fruit for diabetics.
The fruit, leaves and seeds of the black plum tree can be used in order to control the level of sugar in the blood. A good portion is half a cup of black plums daily.
Strawberries
They have a large amount of antioxidants, vitamins and fiber. In addition, they are low in carbohydrates and have a glycemic index of less than 40. The intake of this fruit will give you a feeling of fullness and will help you to keep your blood sugar level stable and increase your energy level. Three quarters of a cup of strawberries a day is considered a good portion.
Apples
They are rich in soluble fiber, vitamin C and antioxidants. They also contain pectin that helps detoxify the body and eliminate harmful waste products. It reduces the insulin needs of diabetics by up to 35%. The glycemic index: from 30 to 50.
Apples also help prevent heart attacks, reduce the risk of cancer and prevent eye diseases among diabetics. It is recommended to consume a small or medium apple a day.
Oranges
One of the healthiest fruits that can be included in a regular diet for diabetes. They contain high amounts of fiber, vitamin C and other minerals such as thiamine that help control blood sugar levels. It is a low glycemic index food (ranges between 31 and 51).
A good way to avoid the rapid increase in blood glucose is to consume fruits along with fiber-rich foods such as Rancho Natura juices or flaked oats, flaxseed, whole-grain biscuit or as a dessert in those meals that contain salad both at lunch and dinner. Even dinner can be added to salads.
